Beschreibung:
This seminar is concerned with the negotiation of colonialism in contemporary historical novels. We will be focussing in our discussion on two examples by Anglophone writers that deal esepcially with German colonialism in Africa:
• M.G. Vassanji _The Book of Secrets_ (1994)
• Abdulrazak Gurnah _After Lives_ (2020)
We will do extensive readings in class meetings, sometimes prepared for in online groups, sometimes based on a list of key questions and concerns. Students will be expected to conduct some historical research, read secondary material, and present and discuss these in class.
The primary works may be obtained as e-book or hard copy (via online sources), please make sure that you start your reading as soon as possible, we will start discussing passages from the novels after three weeks into the seminar, so you need to be able to finish the readings in time!
